Students Deliver Hot Meals to Homeless on Icy Night

Normal, Ill. - Midwest College of Cosmetology has been part of the Central Illinois community since 1998 and is known as one of the premier cosmetology programs in the region.

Beyond its reputation as a training ground for outstanding cosmetologists, estheticians, makeup artists, and others working in the beauty industry, the staff is equally proud of their reputation for lending support in the community and helping their neighbors.

In January 2011, as a blizzard was heading toward Central Illinois, a group of 12 students and instructors from Midwest College of Cosmetology braved ice pellets and freezing temperatures to spend an evening preparing and serving a hot meal to homeless individuals at the Salvation Army’s Washington street center in Bloomington. They served food to approximately 100 people.

According to MCC Director Jennifer Fiorini, community involvement is an important component in the overall development of the students. She explained it this way, “In addition to training on the salon floor, we want our students to be responsible citizens and business people. Not only do they appreciate their own lives, but they are seen as ambassadors to their communities. It builds a sense of pride in the student.”

In recent years, students and staff have lent their support toward a number of causes including raising money for the Humane Society of Central Illinois to help purchase food and supplies for abandoned pets; donating toys to needy kids during the holidays; and even collecting clean hair clippings from the salon floor that were turned into oil-absorbing mats. Those hair mats were used as part of the clean-up efforts after the Gulf Coast oil spill of 2010.

Midwest College of Cosmetology offers full and part-time programs in Cosmetology, Esthetics (care of skin, hair removal, and professional makeup artistry), Massage Therapy, and Instructor Training. At the end of each program, students will be prepared to promote professional client services, create unique looks offered by top professions, operate a successful business, and more.
