Continuing Education

Illinois State Requirements
Cosmetologist Certify on the renewal application to successful completion of a minimum of 14 hours of continuing education.  Nail technicians and Estheticians need a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education.  Massage Therapy needs a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education.  Instructors need a minimum of 24 hours.  All continuing education hours must come from a cosmetology sponsor registered with the Division, within the 2 years prior to the expiration date of the license. One half of the required continuing education hours can be acquired via online or correspondence. A pre-renewal period is the 24 month period proceeding the renewal date in the year of renewal.

License expiration dates:

• Cosmetologist - September 30 of each odd numbered year.
• Nail technicians - October 31 of each even numbered year.
• Estheticians - September 30 of each odd numbered year.
•  Massage Therapy – December 30 of even numbered year.
• Instructors – September 30 of each even numbered year.  Which 12 hours must be instructor based and an additional 12 hours in the field of specialty.

How do I renew my Illinois license?
The Illinois license renewal period will officially begin July 2nd. The state licensing division said they will send postcards for the renewal mid to late July for cosmetologists and about the first week of August for estheticians. If your address has changed, go to https://www.idfpr.com/DPR/CHG_INFO/DEFAULT.asp to update your address with the licensing division. There is a renewal fee and $10 late fee if you miss the deadline.
